Our history

OUR HISTORY

For 25 years we have celebrated the life of our friend Eddie Rosen "Big Eddie". Eddie was a hockey goal keeper and died in his sleep of Meniningitis aged 18. Each year we held an annual hockey match (which we still do) and we invite everyone associated with us to come and join in. The match is often a 18 a-side carnival of all ages from our children up to Michael (Eddie's dad) who is in his 80's. It is a time to remember friends, have a catch up with people that we might not have send for many a year.

We have always discussed the idea of running our own tournament, so in 2023, Sam said lets do it. No more talking about it, lets commit to it and so Saffrons6s was born. Now in to the third year the tournament has a life of its own already, we have numerous people that help on our organising committee, who do all manner of things behind the scenes and the tournament has grown into something bigger than we could have imagined.

We wish it didn't have to take the loss of our friend "Big Eddie", but I also know he would be looking down cracking open a beer, telling a joke and being embarrassed we had done this for him.

In the photo above our 4 of the original "Gunners" who were friends with Eddie. Barry, Ollie, Sam and Ben. Come and say "hello" to any of us.

The tournament wasn't just about getting people together to have a laugh and play some hockey, but was also to highlight and raise awareness of Meningitis and the work that Meningitis Research Foundation do. If we can make you aware of the symptoms then we might be able to save one life, then it has been worth it. Please check out the Meningitis page as it really is life saving stuff.
